Jonjo Shelvey
Another of Liverpool’s exciting prospects, Romford-born Jonjo Shelvey is captain of the England U19 team. When the midfielder signed from Charlton Athletic for an initial fee of ?1.7million in the summer of 2010 he drew comparisons to a youthful Steven Gerrard. He had spells with Arsenal and West Ham before emerging through the ranks at Charlton, where he became their youngest ever player – and later goalscorer – at 16 years and 59 days. He notched eight goals in 49 appearances for the Londoners before heading north. He made his Liverpool debut in disappointing circumstances, going on as a late substitute in a shock League Cup defeat by Second Division Northampton Town on September 22, 2010, before impressing in several Europa League outings. Shelvey has represented England U16s and U17s, captaining the former to the Victory Shield in 2007. In order for him to gain first team experience he went out on loan to Championship side Blackpool from September 2011 to December 31.
